Bexley Removals Health and Safety Policy

Bexley Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our aims, responsibilities and arrangements for managing health and safety across our operations.

Policy Statement

Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice relating to removals, transportation, manual handling and storage activities.

We recognise that safety is integral to the quality of our service. Every removal, whether domestic or commercial, will be planned and carried out with health and safety as a priority, from initial survey through to loading, transit, unloading and placement of items.

Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety within Bexley Removals rests with the company management, who will ensure that adequate resources, information, training and supervision are provided. Management will regularly review performance, investigate incidents and promote continuous improvement in our safety standards.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for implementing this policy on site and in vehicles, including carrying out dynamic risk assessments, briefing staff on specific hazards, checking equipment and ensuring that agreed procedures are followed during every move.

All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. They must cooperate with the company in implementing this policy, follow safe systems of work, use equipment correctly and report any hazards, near misses, accidents or unsafe practices without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We will conduct suitable and sufficient risk assessments for our activities, including but not limited to household removals, office moves, packing services, loading and unloading vehicles, use of lifting equipment and storage operations. These assessments will identify hazards such as manual handling, slips and trips, working at height, traffic movements, confined spaces and adverse weather conditions.

Based on the findings of these assessments, Bexley Removals will develop and maintain safe systems of work. These may include specific procedures for lifting and carrying, safe loading patterns, securing loads in vehicles, using ramps and trolleys, and controlling access around properties and vehicles. Risk assessments and procedures will be reviewed regularly and after any significant incident or change in working practices.

Manual Handling and Use of Equipment

Manual handling is a key element of removals work and presents a risk of back injuries and musculoskeletal disorders if not properly controlled. We will minimise manual handling risks by planning each move carefully, using appropriate handling aids and ensuring that loads are kept within safe limits for the individuals involved.

Employees will receive training in correct lifting techniques, team lifting, use of trolleys, skates, ramps and other moving equipment. Only trained and authorised personnel will operate any powered equipment or lifting devices. All equipment used by Bexley Removals will be maintained in good condition, inspected regularly and taken out of service if found to be defective.

Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety

Our vehicles are central to our operations and we take road safety seriously. Vehicles will be maintained, serviced and inspected in line with legal requirements and company standards. Before use, drivers will carry out basic checks and ensure that loads are correctly distributed and securely restrained to prevent movement during transit.

Drivers must be competent, appropriately licensed and medically fit to drive. They must adhere to speed limits, parking restrictions, hours of work regulations and any site-specific rules. Mobile devices and in-vehicle technology must be used safely and in accordance with the law and company procedures.

Customer, Public and Property Safety

Bexley Removals will take reasonable steps to protect customers, neighbours, visitors and members of the public from risks arising from our work. This includes maintaining clear access routes, using warning signs or barriers where appropriate, and carefully managing vehicle movements and loading areas.

We will handle customers belongings and property with care to prevent damage and avoid creating hazards such as blocked fire exits, unstable stacks of boxes or trailing cables. Where work is carried out in shared spaces, we will coordinate with building managers or other occupants to ensure safe access and egress at all times.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff will receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their roles, including manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, hazard awareness and emergency procedures. Additional training will be provided when new equipment, vehicles or methods of work are introduced.

Information about risks and control measures will be communicated through briefings, toolbox talks and written procedures. Supervisors will monitor working practices, provide guidance and correct unsafe behaviour. No employee will be asked to carry out a task for which they have not been adequately trained or supervised.

Accidents, Incidents and First Aid

All accidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible to enable prompt investigation and corrective action. Bexley Removals will keep appropriate records, analyse trends and implement measures to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.

Suitable first aid arrangements will be in place, including trained first aiders, first aid kits in vehicles and premises, and procedures for contacting emergency services where required. Employees must familiarise themselves with these arrangements and act promptly if an incident occurs.

Consultation and Policy Review

Bexley Removals is committed to consulting with employees on health and safety matters, encouraging feedback and suggestions for improvement. We recognise that those carrying out the work are often best placed to identify practical solutions to safety issues.

This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, or sooner if there are significant changes in legislation, company activities or following an incident. Updated versions will be communicated to all employees and made available to customers and other interested parties upon request.
